SAN DIEGO RESIDENT ROBIN TARR
RECEIVES THE 10NEWS LEADERSHIP AWARD
10News honors Robin Tarr for founding the Jonathan Tarr Foundation (JTF) which gives scholarships to high school seniors attending continuation schools.
When Robin's son, Jonathan, was tragically killed at age 17 in an automobile accident, Robin Tarr decided to fund a scholarship in his memory. Now, almost ten years later, the foundation has awarded over 200 scholarships and raised over $181,000. The JTF awards scholarships to high school seniors who are non-traditional students. These students often attend continuation or trade schools or are involved in Pacific Islander and AVID groups. Many students are the first in their families to graduate from high school and the first to attend college.
The Jonathan Tarr Foundation is an education based non-profit located in Encinitas, CA., providing Windows of Opportunity Scholarships to a diverse population of underserved boys and girls not normally targeted for academic assistance.
Many volunteers serve JTF, mostly at the invitation of Robin. She has been known to build effective relationships with others and invite them to help support "her students."
Board member Karen Rodriguez recently said, "If you look Robin in the eyes when she speaks, you can't turn her down when she asks you for help.”
Robin Tarr will receive the 10News Leadership Award on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 in the category of Community Action.
